What is Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is an official United States federal holiday, which is observed every year on November 11, to honor military veterans - those who served and serving in the U.S Armed Forces. Veterans Day is also well-known as Armistice Day. It coincides with other days like Remembrance Day or Memorable Day or Armed Forces Day. Veterans Day should not be confused with Memorable Day and Armed Forces Day.

Veterans Day is the day that celebrates the service of all United States Military Veterans, whereas memorable Day honors those who died in military service. Armed Forces Day honors to those who are currently serving in the United States Military services. All these holidays are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I.
Major conflicts of World War were closed on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918.When Armistice with Germany went into the Result. The United States previously observed this day as Armistice Day, and later it was renamed as Veterans Day in 1954.

History of Veterans Day

On June 4, 1926 - The U.S Congress adopted a purpose requesting President Calvin issue an annual report for the observance of November 11 with appropriate rituals. The Act granted by Congress on May 13, 1938, got approved and declared 11th November of each year to be an official holiday - A day to be devoted to the cause of world peace. And from then celebrated and known as Armistice Day”.
In the year 1945, World War II - A veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama got an idea to expand the Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, for not just those who passed away in World War I. Weeks led an allocation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea of Annual Veterans Day.

'Weeks' led the first national celebration in Alabama in the year 1947 – 1984(annually till his Death).In 1982, President Reagan honored 'Weeks' with the presidential citizenship medal at the White House as the driving force for a federal holiday. Elizabeth Dole, who organized the session for President Reagan, determined Weeks as a "Father of Veterans Day."
The United States. Representative Ed Rees from Emporia, Kansas, offered a bill inaugurating the holiday through Congress. On May 26 -1954, President Dwight Eisenhower, who is also from Kansas, signed the bill into law. It’s been eight and a half years since Weeks held his first Armistice Day for all veterans.
On June 1, 1954, Congress had rewritten the bill substituting "Armistice" with "Veterans, ” and since then it is known as Veterans Day. In 1954 - the National Veterans Award was also created. Ed Rees from Emporia, Kansas was awarded the first National Veterans Award in Birmingham, Alabama, for supporting and law giving to make Veterans Day as s Federal day.

Observance of Veterans Day

Though Veterans Day was originally scheduled to be celebrated every year on November 11, beginning in 1971, under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, Veterans Day was rescheduled to the 4th Monday of October. From 1971 to 1977 it was celebrated in the month of October. In 1978, it was marked as the original schedule on November 11.

As it is a Federal Holiday, many American employees and numerous schoolchildren have Veterans Day off from school or work. If Veterans Day falls on Saturday, then the preceding Friday or Saturday will be announced as a holiday. If Veterans Day falls on a Sunday, it is usually observed on the resulting Monday. 
The poll held in 2010 by the Society for Human Resource Management found that 21 percent of workers intended to observe the holiday in 2011. Unimportant federal government offices are shut. No email will be sent. All federal employees get paid for the holiday. And those who are mandatory to work on the holiday at times get extra pay in addition to their salaries.

What is a Veteran?

A veteran is a person, who has a long experience or service in a particular field or occupation. A Veteran is also an individual who served in the armed forces. Retirees who either served for 20+ years or medical discharge status are also called as Veterans.
There are few kinds of veterans such as combat and war veteran, but all veterans are treated equally. A war veteran - is whichever GI (Government Issue) ordered to foreign waters or soil to take place in a direct or any support action against a foe. 

The operant state is that any Government Issue sent in impairment’s way. Whereas Combat Veteran - is any Government Issue who experiences any level of hostility for any duration of time resulting from an offensive, defensive or friendly fire military accomplishment involving in any pre-designated or post-designated stage of combat war operations.

Definition of Veteran

A military service defines a veteran as "A military veteran is a person who served for any span of time in any military service branch". "An individual who has long served in military forces especially during a war". 
A Veteran is defined as -a person who serves or served for the respective country in an Air Force, Military or Marine services, and also someone who was honored or freed from that place under a given situation or condition other than dishonorable.

In 1919, the then president of the United States, Woodrow Wilson announced the day as Armistice Day which was to be celebrated as a day of gratitude and thanks to all the armed forces personnel who defended the country from external forces in times of war. On May 13, 1938, the United States Congress approved an act which recognized November 11 as a legal holiday by the name of ‘Armistice Day’

In the year of 1926, an official end of World War I was recognized by the Congress of the United States of America and it was declared that the anniversary of the signing of the armistice is celebrated with pride and prayer.
