This day is celebrated by a number of activities like church services, military parades 2020 on popular streets in cities of the United States and the flag of the country is on half-mast during the day as a mark of respect for the living veterans. Across the United States of America, a two-minute silence is observed at 11am remembering those who fought in the wars protecting the country.
Why Do We Celebrate Veterans Day On November 11th, 2020
As per historical records, WWI officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, but the day of November 11, 1918, marked the day when war activities ceased with the signing of the armistice. An armistice was the formal agreement signed by the two parties to stop the fighting in the war. Hence many other countries that were a part of the Allied Nations group also celebrate the day in their own way. The countries were the United Kingdom, Canada and other Commonwealth countries at that time.
In 1919, the then president of the United States, Woodrow Wilson announced the day as Armistice Day which was to be celebrated as a day of gratitude and thanks to all the armed forces personnel who defended the country from external forces in times of war. The first Veterans Day 2020 was officially declared on November 11, 1919, by the then president Wilson and the day was also known as the Armistice Day. After the world war ended on 11 November, the small and pretty red flower, the poppy became the symbolization of the sacrifices made by all those members of the armed forces who stood up and defended the country in all the wars.
