When is Memorial Day 2021? What is Memorial Day 2021? Memorial Day is a day of remembrance to honor men and women who died in the service of the United States of America. It is a US Federal holiday which is celebrated on the last Monday of the month of May each year. In the year of 1971, this day was given the honor of prominence by an act of the Congress and henceforth became a national holiday in the United States of America. It is also known by its other name, Decoration Day.
The practice started after the civil war as a regular ceremony to honor the military’s martyrs of the war and monuments were also erected across many US towns and cities in their honor. After World War 1 ended, all the fallen soldiers, pilots, and all others who took part in the war were also honored and remembered in the celebration of Memorial Day. With time, the practice of celebrating the servicemen and women went on to include martyrs of all the wars which took place. Veterans Day 2021
In 1868, on May 5 the then national commander of the United States Grand Army of the Republic, vide in general order no 11, proclaimed Decoration Day as a day to honor the dead of the war by decorating their graves with flowers and other items. That day later came to be popularly known as Memorial Day.
The President of the United States in 1966, Lyndon Johnson, designated the state of Waterloo in New York as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. As per multiple unconfirmed sources, more than 25 cities and towns in the United States claim to be the official birthplace of Memorial Day despite the official announcement in May 1966 by the then-president.
